Meta Descriptions – A Compelling Example of Why You Should Use Them

Posted on | June 17, 2010 | 1 Comment

On a random surf of the internet (you can tell it’s a hot day) I couldn’t help but notice the following meta description ‘fail’.

Missing Meta Description

This is a great example of why you should make sure all your pages have relevant meta data including meta descriptions.

Google look for references to search terms in page text plus meta description to find a relevant snippet to show it’s users.

If they can’t find suitable text they will fall back on the meta description. In this case the site is built in Adobe Flash so the only text Google could find to use was from the page load counter which isn’t very pretty.

Snippets are key factor in persuading people to click through from the SERPs to your site. Presenting a searcher with ‘loading….52. loading…..’ is likely to draw peoples attention for the wrong reasons.

Like it did mine!

Hmmm I’m impressed! Post cached by Google pretty much as soon as published. Must be doing something right…
