Google Place Page Result Showing in SERPs
Posted on | August 13, 2010 | 3 Comments
Whilst checking a sites rankings in Google.co.uk for the term ‘equestrian property’ I noticed (hard not to) that its Google Place page is showing as the 4th result.
This is the first time I’ve seen a Google Places page appear on it’s own in the SERPs. Normally they appear as part of the Local business results.
In addition I think it’s unusual that this is a non geo targeted phrase. i.e. just ‘equestrian property‘ and not ‘equestrian property <location>’.
The Google Place page for Equine Online has been online for several years and is in fact fairly out of date now in terms of company address and description so no specific optimising of the page has been done recently.
Apart from this great exposure for Equine Online, the even better news is that the organic ranking result has moved up from number 10 where it has been for months to number 6. This could be accounted for by the more frequent adding of equestrian property to the site but could it also have any to do with the Place Page result?
I will be monitoring the traffic stats with interest to see if this Place Page result has a positive impact on CTRs from the SERPs.
I would be interested in feedback from other SEOs who have spotted similar results.

Meta Descriptions – A Compelling Example of Why You Should Use Them
Posted on | June 17, 2010 | 1 Comment
On a random surf of the internet (you can tell it’s a hot day) I couldn’t help but notice the following meta description ‘fail’.

This is a great example of why you should make sure all your pages have relevant meta data including meta descriptions.
Google look for references to search terms in page text plus meta description to find a relevant snippet to show it’s users.
If they can’t find suitable text they will fall back on the meta description. In this case the site is built in Adobe Flash so the only text Google could find to use was from the page load counter which isn’t very pretty.
Snippets are key factor in persuading people to click through from the SERPs to your site. Presenting a searcher with ‘loading….52. loading…..’ is likely to draw peoples attention for the wrong reasons.

Twitter Friendship Destroy
Posted on | May 28, 2010 | No Comments
Whilst ‘unfollowing’ some tweeters today I somehow managed to get a Twitter XML fail. Maybe it was my frenzied unfollowing clicking that did it?
It did give me the opportunity though to discover Twitters http://twitter.com/friendships/destroy/ url which I didn’t previously know existed.
Kind of harsh though isn’t it? Friendship destroy? I feel almost guilty…
